Classic Vanilla Custard This classic vanilla custard is a simple, timeless dessert that can be enjoyed on its own or with a variety of toppings. It's perfect for any occasion, and easy enough to make in a pinch.
Preheat your oven to 325 F (165 C). In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the milk until just warm. In a separate bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs until well combined. Gradually stir the warm milk into the egg mixture, being careful not to scramble the eggs. Add 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract for flavor (optional). Pour the mixture into four 6-ounce ramekins. Place the ramekins in a large baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until the water level comes halfway up the side of the ramekins. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center. Remove the ramekins from the baking dish and let them cool to room temperature. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until ready to serve. Eat plain or topped with berries, whipped cream, or caramel sauce. Enjoy!
